The data for the graphs on http://math.furman.edu/~dcs/aaup/benefits/index.php are from the "Annual Report on the Economic Status of the Profession," published every spring in Academe, the bimonthly magazine of the American Association of University Professors. A summary of the report for 2001-02 is available here. However, data for individual schools are available only through the printed version of Academe. The Furman Chapter of the AAUP thanks Professor Bill Rogers for having compiled these data since 1981.
Definitions of the terms "salary," "major fringe benefits," and "compensation," as they are used in the AAUP survey, are available here. The data for our graphs of total compensation and salary come directly from the AAUP survey. We compute the data for the graph of the cost of major fringe benefits by subtracting salary from compensation. Note that the AAUP defines compensation to be salary plus major fringe benefits.
